Project + DCCEEW Community Battery Project
Perth, Western Australia

Powertech achieved an Australian first by successfully integrating an ATESS Power conversion System (PCS) and CATL Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a sophisticated third-party control overlay, showcasing advanced technical capabilities.

Western Power required a turnkey solution for the design, supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of five Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), branded “Community Batteries,” to be connected to their low voltage (LV) network. The BESS is designed to enhance network asset utilisation and power quality by responding to network conditions and enabling local LV customers to store excess PV generation and discharge it during peak demand, orchestrated by third-party market participants.

Local LV customers will be offered the opportunity to export their excess photovoltaic (PV) generation to charge the Community Battery when PV generation is at its highest and be able to discharge the stored energy during the evening peak.

Powertech was responsible for project design, management, and reporting, adhering to specified procedures and providing deliverables like design plans, management plans, and status reports.

Powertech managed site activities, maintained safety and quality, and handled documentation including drawings, registers, and manuals. Compliance with health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements was mandatory, including permits, traffic management, and underground service location. Powertech also managed site facilities, equipment, waste, and communication protocols.

As a leading system integrator, Powertech achieved an Australian first by successfully integrating an ATESS Power conversion System (PCS) and CATL Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a sophisticated third-party control overlay, showcasing advanced technical capabilities.

Addressing prevalent and often disruptive noise issues in existing Community Batteries, Powertech engineered an innovative acoustic enclosure, attaining previously unobtainable sound levels. This significant achievement effectively mitigates noise concerns, fosters greater community acceptance and harmonious integration of these storage assets.
